Regular eye checks

Regular eye checks are important for everyone, as some serious eye conditions do not have any visible early warning symptoms. It’s especially important to have regular eye checks with an optician or an optometrist if there is a history of eye problems in your family.

In an emergency

Visit the A+E department at the Northern General Hospital immediately if you experience any of the following:

  • Sudden or severe eye pain
  • Loss of sight
  • Lots of flashing lights
  • Chemicals in your eye
  • Severe eye trauma There is an eye casualty department based at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital for adults only-Monday to Friday between 08:30 and 16:30, excluding bank holidays. For children, please go to the Childrens Hospital.
